Solidarity Week in Galati

ArcelorMittal hosted in 2014 the Solidarity Holiday, a project carried out by the Group's foundation in numerous countries. This first edition organized by our unit gathered 9 volunteers from : Belgium, Brazil, Luxembourg, Canada, India, Kazahstan, USA, Ukraine and South Africa, who were involved in social and educational activities. Solidarity Holiday was mainly focused on working with 32 students in our county. The foreign volunteers and representatives of Junior Achievement Association shared with the students information regarding turning an entrepreneurship idea into benefit for the local community. At the end of the week, the young entrepreneurs presented their ideas organized in a business plan and the best of them were awarded.

Besides the training sessions with students, the Solidarity Holiday included multicultural and corporate social responsibility experiences, as our guests visited a kindergarten supported by our unit and gave a helping hand at an elders rest home. The launching of the Solidarity Holiday included a visit on the platform, where the volunteers had the opportunity of meeting their counterparts in local departments such as: Spare Parts, Automation, Purchasing, Sintering, Hot Strip Mill, Human Resources, etc, while the day ended with a visit to Blast Furnace no. 5.

A Busy Year for the ArcelorMittal Galati Volunteers

2013 was full of humanitarian actions that the ArcelorMittal Galati volunteers have organized in support of people in need. Ranging from initiatives to support families with difficult material conditions up to collective approaches targeting numerous groups, solidarity was the "engine" that has animated the core of volunteers from the Steel Plant.

No less than six relief actions were held in February, consisting of firewood transports, food, clothing and school supplies for needy families in the community of Galati county, colleagues or children of former colleagues who lost their lives. Another ten shipments of firewood and various goods took place in March in the city along with several in the country side: Firtanesti, Smardan, Rogojeni, Namoloasa and Cuza Voda.

Open Doors Day, organized for the first time on the Steel Platform, has benefitted from the support of over 30 volunteers in the event organization.

Moreover, Children's Day and the end of the School Year brought in villages of Rogojeni and Firtanesti numerous volunteers who brought a smile on the faces of more than 100 children aged between four and 16 years old. Volunteers prepared music, sweets, toys, gifts from ArcelorMittal and also an artistic program entertaining the little ones during a full day.

Also in June, Alexandra, an abandoned new-born baby, became the spiritual child of the volunteers. "The 21 godparents baptism" was a first time event in the church where the little girl was christened.

The volunteers from the Plant have made a habit of visiting the Center “Materna” from Galati, hosting abandoned babies or young mothers rejected by their families. Here, the volunteers spent time with babies, the young mothers and the nurses, besides providing them the bare necessities, the attention and the recognition they need.

In September, on their own resources, the group of kind-hearted people have provided everything necessary for an abandoned child, adopted by a colleague of ours, so he may go to school. At the same time, the volunteers were involved in sharing aid for flood victims in north of the Galati county. The population affected by heavy rains in Cudalbi, Cuca, Costache Negri and Slobozia Conachi received donated clothes collected from employees, hygiene products, water and slag for rebuilding the infrastructure.

In October, the volunteers have again assumed the status of godparents, in celebrating the one year birthday of another girl from the Maternal Center. They offered this little girl and her mommy, moments of joy.

The year 2013 ended the same way for the dynamic group of volunteers which widens little by little. They gathered more than 100 institutionalized children, disabled people and orphans in two events held at the ArcelorMittal club in town around the holidays to provide them, with the support of their colleagues and the unit management, moments of emotional charge, but also the fulfillment of their wishes expressed in letters addressed to Santa Claus.

"The Earth Hour" – celebrated by ArcelorMittal Galati volunteers

A group of volunteers from ArcelorMittal Galati, who share the preoccupation with the climate change, celebrated "The Earth Hour" downtown, reminding to all of us the need to protect our planet’s life. "The Earth Hour" is an international event that is held annually on the last Saturday of March, in order to encourage all users of electricity, at home or at work, to turn off the lights that are not vital with view to raising awareness on the importance of saving the energy.

Let's Do It, Romania!

More than 60 ArcelorMittal Galati volunteers joined the 2012 national campaign "Let's Do It, Romania!", launched to raise the public awareness regarding the importance of the environment and to motivate the population to keep the country clean. "Let's do it!" was first launched in 2009, when hundreds of volunteers have changed the face of Estonia. Not long after this, echoes of this action have come to our country, and since 2010, our unit supports this campaign, attracting volunteers from among the employees.
